JESUS CHRIST IN THE PAGES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

Isaiah 9:6-7

For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of His government and peace

There will be no end,

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

To order it and establish it with judgment and justice

From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah’s depiction of the child as the Wonderful Counsellor finds fulfillment in Christ’s teaching ministry. Jesus, through parables, sermons, and personal counsel, reveals God’s wisdom. His counsel is both practical and transformative.

The title Mighty God points to His sovereignty and divine power, reflected in the Gospels through miracles, authority over nature, and victory over demonic forces.

Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace speak to the eternal and redemptive aspects of His reign. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus inaugurates a kingdom of peace that transcends political structures and establishes reconciliation between God and humanity. Paul emphasizes that Jesus’ kingdom is not limited to temporal rule but embodies eternal righteousness, justice, and peace.

Isaiah’s prophecy of the increase of his government and of peace…with no end finds fulfillment in Christ’s ongoing lordship and the expansion of His kingdom through the Church. In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him, commissioning His followers to make disciples of all nations. This ongoing expansion is both a continuation of Davidic kingship and a realization of the messianic vision: a kingdom extending to all peoples.

Isaiah 9:6-7 points to a kingdom inaugurated yet not fully consummated. Jesus’ first advent fulfills the promise of God’s presence, guidance, and redemptive power, while His second advent will bring the complete realization.

We are invited to witness, participate, and live under the authority of this Divine King, whose reign transforms individual lives and shapes the destiny of the world.

Ask God to:

  1. help you to seek God’s counsel above all other voices.
  2. Give you confidence in God’s ability to overcome every obstacle, fear, and spiritual battle you face.
  3. fill your life with God’s peace so that you may become an instrument of reconciliation and harmony.
