JESUS CHRIST IN THE PAGES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

Ecclesiastes 12:11

The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd.

The image of the shepherd conveys care, leadership, and provision. In the Old Testament, God is repeatedly portrayed as a shepherd who tends His people, guiding them through life and safeguarding them from spiritual danger.

Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd, the one who knows His sheep intimately and lays down His life for them: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd (John 10:11–16).

All true wisdom, counsel, and moral guidance find their ultimate expression in Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:3 affirms that in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The fullness of divine understanding is revealed in Christ alone.

The one Shepherd of Ecclesiastes becomes a literal reality in the person of Jesus, who brings together the scattered strands of human understanding and divine instruction into perfect unity.

The imagery of the shepherd in Ecclesiastes connects directly with Jesus’ ministry of care, correction, and restoration. Just as a shepherd uses goads to gently guide sheep along the right path, the words of Jesus and the teaching of Scripture direct us toward righteousness, conviction, and growth.

The nails firmly fixed illustrate the permanence and reliability of the guidance given. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus promises His perpetual presence with His disciples: I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

While our wisdom is partial and often divided, Christ, as the one Shepherd, unites the teachings of God, the promises of Scripture, and the moral guidance for life into a coherent whole. All spiritual instruction is derived from the authority of the one Shepherd, Jesus Christ. By following Him, we experience guidance that is both personal and universal.

Pray that:

  1. You may root your life in the wisdom that is hidden in God alone.
  2. Your life may be aligned with God’s righteousness.
