Lenten Reflections

Lenten Reflections from the Central Community

When I was a little girl, I would spend summers with my grandparents on the family homestead near Regina, Saskatchewan. It was a modest little farm with a small house that contained a very big kitchen. That kitchen was the “heart” of the house. It was where we gathered for meals and where we shared the news of the day. It was also in that warm and cozy place that my grandmother shared with me the stories of her faith. She would talk about the ministry of Jesus – a lot! One of the stories that captivated me the most was the fact that, before he began his public ministry, Jesus wandered off into the wilderness to reflect on his faith.

The booklet you hold in your hands is a companion piece for your 40-day Lenten journey into the wilderness with Jesus. Just think of my grandmother, Wilhelmina, journeying with you and surrounding you with her love. This booklet contains the thoughts, the dreams, the insights and the wisdom of a group of people who were asked to write the stories of their faith as they read and reflected on passages of scripture. May their reflections offer you comfort and insights during your upcoming journey. The deep spirituality of each author permeates every page, offering you much food for thought.

I take this opportunity to thank every individual who said “Yes” (sometimes with trepidation!) to writing a reflection. They are courageous women and men. Why? Because to speak of our faith and then to share it with others is not typical for us in the United Church. We prefer to leave that to the perceived expert – the Minister! But each person who took the time to reflect and write is surely ministering to us, offering us comfort as we travel through the six weeks of Lent. I offer a special word of thanks to Colleen Robarts for formatting the booklet, finding beautiful photographs from many sources. My other great colleague Kathy Seibel deserves much thanks for posting our reflections on our website and Facebook.

I encourage you to use this booklet as a resource for yourself as you embark on your Lenten journey, commencing with Ash Wednesday and continuing through to Easter Sunday. Find a quiet corner, bring your Bible down from the shelf, scan the passages and then read the reflection for that particular day. You might even jot down a reflection of your own. Devote 15 minutes every day to spending time with God, your Bible and your good friends from Central, represented in this booklet.

My deepest prayer is that your faith will be enriched by what is offered here. May your faith be uplifted and renewed by the reflections of the folks from Central who are journeying through Lent with you and with me.

Blessings for your Lenten journey,
